Using excel to draw Kurtosis was my worst mistake

Crafting formulas in excel is not an easy task and I still suffer at it

So in my previous article, I discussed how I’m managing my consistency and my 6-month experience on medium. What I learned and what I’m gonna do hereafter.

Luckily, my college gate didn’t lock me out, I made it in on time. Phew!

Therefore, coming to the point, today I was planning to write about kurtosis, yet another statistical topic that I enjoyed while reading and understanding.

But I didn’t read it from my college notes, as it totally sucks.

My data analytics subject professor fully copied the notes from Google, and I can’t understand a thing — not helpful at all.

But after spending some time on the internet I was finally able to understand properly.

So, what is kurtosis?

In simple terms, it is a statistical concept that is used to measure the values present at the tails of a normal distribution graph.

You might know about normal distribution, do you? look at the image below 👇

Well, let’s understand it once again.

A normal distribution is a bell curved-shaped illustration where most of the data is concentrated in the middle of a dataset.

However, kurtosis is not like that, it holds huge values on either side of its tails, and it is proportionate to the center of the dataset (the heart of normal distribution).

Well, inserting so many concepts altogether, might have imbalanced your thought processing, let me clear it up in one short,

A normal distribution is defined by its “peakedness”, while kurtosis is defined by its “tailedness”

Therefore, up to this point, you can now properly differentiate between these 2 concepts based on their unique traits.

Let’s move on to the next topic

Types of kurtosis

Kurtosis can be classified into 3 types.

Classification of kurtosis
I can’t find any better image than this this (source: Scribbr)

Mesokurtic

This type of kurtosis looks similar to a normal distribution curve (bell-shaped). It is neither pointed nor crazy long tails, just an average.

Leptokurtic

Distribution curve with long tails spread throughout the horizontal axis of the graph is called leptokurtic.

By seeing the graph, you can easily understand there’s a huge load of data on its tailed region.

Platykurtic

Distribution graph with thinner tails and broad peak

I’ve used the word distribution several times, well it actually means how data is plotted and organized on a particular dataset.

My worst mistake: Drawing a kurtosis graph in Excel

Drawing a Kurtosis graph in Excel, was one of the heftiest tasks I’ve done today, I don’t know why it came into my mind and I started doing research on this topic.

I used to think that kurtosis could be drawn by using R or Python, but knowing that Excel can do that, I straight away jumped into making it.

Well, here’s the output I received

The End result (Author in his Excel Application)

Seriously, I’m not gonna bore you with the details, you can find them here.

But if you spot any kind of mistake in my workbook, then kindly rectify it me in the comments, you’re always welcome.

Let’s end this man

Well, I think, I’ve explained the concept of kurtosis in the simplest way possible, yet there are many other topics connected with it,

It’s not possible to discuss them all in one article.

Let’s talk about it another day for real.

Show your love by clapping 👏 and sharing it with your fellow mates.
